Alert Fatigue: A Practical Guide for In-House IT Teams

If your phone buzzes forty times a day and thirty-nine of them don't matter, you will eventually sleep through the one that does. That is alert fatigue, and it is fixable.

1. Count before you change anything

For one week, note every alert and whether anyone had to act. Most teams find that a small handful of noisy checks cause most of the volume. NOCBuddy's Noise report shows this automatically.

2. Page only for things a human must fix now

If nobody needs to act tonight, it should not wake anyone. Send those to email or a morning digest instead.

3. Group and de-duplicate

One failing server can raise dozens of alerts. Group them into a single incident so you get one notification, not thirty.

4. Use quiet hours and maintenance windows

Planned patching should never page anyone. Set a maintenance window and alerts from those systems are held back.

5. Escalate instead of blasting everyone

Notify the on-call person first. If they don't acknowledge within a few minutes, escalate to the next person. Everyone else stays undisturbed.

Where to start

Pick your three noisiest alerts and fix or silence them this week. The improvement is usually felt immediately.
